With a population of nearly 8 million, Long Island stretches roughly 120 miles long from the Hudson River to Montauk Point. Renowned for its beaches and parks, top rated schools and universities, food (hello bagels, pizza, and egg sandwiches), and of course its proximity to New York City, it's not hard to understand why so many people choose to call Long Island home. 
Although Brooklyn & Queens are a part of the same land mass, they are considered boroughs of New York City. When referring to Long Island, most will be speaking about Nassau & Suffolk counties; each of which have their own different attractions and atmosphere. 
I myself grew up in a charming town on the rocky north shore which  borders the Long Island Sound. However, my childhood summers were spent on the sandy beaches of the south shore and the Atlantic Ocean.
